…ok, perhaps that title was not the most appropriate one. Anyway, I am here to share with you a way you can eat decadent cakes (like Marie Antoinette) and still contribute back to the society (unlike Marie Antoinette).
I don’t think I can say it better than the baker herself so here’s an excerpt from the shop’s “About Us” page:
Ugly Cake Shop was started by a serious foodie and home baker with a dream to feed the hungry. Armed with an oven and a mixing bowl, she decided to used her God-given skills to spread the love to undernourished kids in Timor-Leste.
For some kids in Timor-Leste, even an egg is a delicacy. Part of Ugly Cake Shop’s profits will go towards buying meat, eggs and other much-needed protein sources for the kids in Shallom School, a school set up by Brazilian missionaries and supported by Agape Baptist Church. Every baked good you purchase from The Ugly Cake Shop will help to supplement their meals! (To find out more about the poverty situation in Timor-Leste, please click here and here.)
We now bake from a licensed central kitchen at Ang Mo Kio and bake to order. You may also find our pop-up stores at Pasar Bella and other events!
Nice lady she is. I met her during the filming of Run Like Mad (you can watch it here) and i was treated to her Lemon Drizzle Cake. It looks plain and unassuming, no fancy packaging, only a plastic wrapper and the aluminium bake tin it was made in.
It was a very moist cake, adequately sweet, with sharp notes of lemon that lingers into a pleasant tartness. May I was really hungry at that moment, but I fell in love with this cake.
I had the privilege to try a couple of their cupcakes as well. I had the Big Daddy Jr, which is an orgy of Nutella and Valrhona in your mouth; Melissa, a dark chocolate cupcake frosted with strawberry and rum frosting, and Juliana, a salted caramel cupcake.
Ugly Cake Shop has got a wide variety of cakes, ranging from a sinful bittersweet dark chocolate to a tart lemon heaven cake. I highly recommend the Lemon Drizzle Cake because of the impeccable balance and smooth transitioning of flavours that the cake has.
Eat something good and do something go too!
