Mother’s Day is this weekend and if you haven’t had any idea where to bring her, Royal Pavilion at Park Regis is serving up some fishy (as in urban fishy not the bad smelling kind) dim sums. Forget your hotel buffets and please, for the love of god, spare her those pretentious cafe brunches; bring her some place she can comfortably sit down and get served some real Cantonese dim sums.
Created by their dim sum chef, Chen Man Wing, each of these handcrafted pockets of love is prepared with the freshest ingredients and an artisan flair with every twirl and line. You have to try the BBQ Snow Bun for its sugary cookie crust and its savory char siew fillings in the middle. The Baked Chicken Pie with Black Truffle Oil is surprisingly tasty too. Chef Chen and his team has also created cute little dim sums like Steamed Spicy Dried Shrimps, Minced Pork and Eggplant Dumplings, Baked Cod Puffs with Black Pepper and Steamed Fresh Scallops, Asparagus and Egg White Dumplings among other regular selections.
But to be honest, the real deal is actually their Royal Smoked Duck (first picture) and Classic Cantonese Claypot Rice with Wax Meat and Chinese Sausage. The duck is succulent with a pleasurable tinge of smokiness infused beautifully into the meat. Then dip it in to the tart and sweet plum sauce to give the meat another level of flavour. The seemingly innocent claypot rice really got my saliva glands going. The fragrance of the claypot cooked rice coupled with the preserved meat got me going for three helpings of this classic Cantonese dish.
This special Mother’s Day menu, aptly named Pockets of Love, is available from now till the 10th of May 2015.
